This bacterium also is considered as a common cause of ulcers worldwide; as many as 90% of people with ulcers have detectable organisms. But most people with H. pylori in their digestive systems do not develop ulcers. The discovery of H. pylori was a Nobel proze winner for medicine.

Helicobacter pylori tests are used to detect a Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in the stomach and upper part of the small intestine (duodenum). The Heliprobe breathing test is a non-invasive simple, rapid testing system for detecting the presence of Helicobacter pylori, and for eradication treatment follow-up. The test is conducted in the clinic and results are immediately available.

To measure H pylori, the patient swallows a capsule that the patient that contains a harmless chemical (C14 labeled urea) that the bacteria, if present will decompose. The resulting product is then easily detected by the analyzer from the patient's breath. After 10 minutes, the patient will breath into the breath sample holder, which then is placed into the analyzer and a button press initiates the analysis. The total testing time is not longer than 20 minutes.

Good to know

The C14 carbon isotope is a naturally occurring radioactive isotope of the carbon atom. It can be found in the air that we breath and the human body. During the Heliprobe test, the patients swallows a quantity of the C14 isotope that generates an amount of radiation equivalent to the radiation naturally absorbed by the body from the environmental background radiation during 24 hours. This is lower by orders of magnitude than the radiation caused by a dental X-ray  for example, and does not pose any measurable risk to the patient.
